Overview

This beautiful destination is hidden inside the Annapurna Conservation Area.

Nar and Phu are two remote mountain villages that have preserved their traditional Tibetan culture, stone houses, colorful prayer flags, and ancient monasteries for hundreds of years.

This is a restricted area which is why fewer trekkers visit, making the journey peaceful and unique.

The trek begins with a scenic drive from Kathmandu to Koto, where the walking trail starts. You will then hike through beautiful forests, deep river gorges, wooden bridges, waterfalls, and wide mountain valleys.

Along the way, you will witness the traditional villages of Meta, Phu, Nar Phedi, and Nar, where you can meet friendly locals and experience their simple mountain lifestyle.

One of the biggest highlights is crossing Kang La Pass (5,320 m / 17,454 ft). This is the highest point of the trek.

From the top, you can enjoy breathtaking views of Annapurna II, Gangapurna, Tilicho Peak, Chulu East, and many snow-covered Himalayan peaks.  After the pass, the trail reaches the famous Annapurna Circuit at Ngawal before driving back to Kathmandu.

Nar Phu trek  is considered moderately difficult to challenge. It is because  of the long walking days, steep trails, and high altitude. This trekking is best suited for trekkers with good fitness and some previous hiking experience.

If you are looking for a true Himalayan adventure  with stunning scenery, rich culture, and fewer crowds, the 9-Day Nar Phu Valley Trek is a perfect match for you.

Essential Information

Nar Phu Valley trek altitude

Nar Phu is a moderate trek, gentle enough to suit most age groups.

The trail largely takes you towards the well-established village paths.Trekkers spend every night in a village rather than camping in the wild.

The highest overnight stops at this destination are Phu village (4,080m) and Nar village (4,200m), the true high point of the trek . Crossing Kang La Pass takes you to the altitude of  5,320m.

No matter the height, the journey is very rewarding, beginning  in alpine forest and dropping you into the open Himalayan terrain, and eventually taking you back down toward the lower villages, making every moment worth it.

Nar Phu falls within a restricted area of the Annapurna region so the number of visitors is tightly controlled.

What you'll find, then, is a small handful of simple, family-run lodges rather than fancy  commercial guesthouses.

That scarcity turns out to be part of the charm. Staying in these homestay-style lodges gives you  genuine warmth and hospitality from the people who live there. This is very rare compared to the commercialized trekking routes in Nepal.

You will find rooms very basic but clean. There are  typically two single beds, a thick mattress, and a pillow giving you enough comfort to rest and sleep.

Likewise, washroom conditions on the Narphu Valley trek are also basic. You will find mostly shared squat toilets in remote teahouses .

Western-style toilets are very rare especially when you go higher up. It gets easier to bring your own toilet paper and sanitizer.

Food menus mostly cover Tibetan and Nepali staples like  dal bhat, momo, thukpa, roNar Phu You also have to be accompanied by a government-licensed trekking guide and your trek must  be arranged through a registered trekking agency in Nepal like Nepal Horizon Treks.

Nar-Phu Valley requires  a Restricted Area Permit (RAP) issued by the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu.

You can contact us for your permit processing. We just  require a valid Nepal visa and a copy of your passport.

Valley Trek Permits

The Nar Phu Valley Trek is located within a restricted area of the Annapurna region. This is  close to the Tibetan Autonomous Region.

Because of its sensitive location, the Nepalese government has introduced special trekking regulations for Nar-Phu valley. It  helps to  preserve the region's unique culture, traditions, and environment.

To enter Nar Phu Valley, independent trekking is not permitted. You must travel in a group of at least two trekkers which is excluding the guide.

Besides the Restricted Area Permit, you'll also need the conservation permits required for the Annapurna region before starting the trek.

We have given below some of the major requirements , check out below :

Permits Required for the Nar Phu Valley Trek

  • Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
  • TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System)

Food and Accommodation during the Nar Phu Trek

Despite being a remote region of Nepal , the Nar Phu Valley Trek attracts  both domestic and international trekkers.  Over the years locals have built and maintained a modest network of teahouses and lodges to welcome them .

lls, and fresh bread  much of it made with vegetables grown right in the villages you pass through.

It's simple food, but filling and yummy which makes the journey more worth it.

Best Time to Trek Nar Phu Valley 2026/2027

One of the main preparations for trekking to Nar-Phu destination is to figure out the ideal timeframe.

The Nar Phu trail can technically be walked year-round, but spring and autumn are considered the best spots. These two seasons  offer the clearest skies and the best mountain views.

Monsoon season has its own beauty that attracts the visitors  . The hills turn green and waterfalls come alive  and the trek is still possible .

That's because Nar Phu, like much of the upper Annapurna region, sits in a rain shadow, with the Annapurna range holding back most of the monsoon clouds.

The lower stretches, however, aren't as lucky. Rain there can disrupt the rough, unpaved drive to and from Besisahar.

In case , if you're planning a monsoon trek, make sure you include a couple of extra days for emergencies.

Nar Phu Valley Trek in Winter

Although Nar Phu valley  is a low-altitude trek, temperatures in Nar and Phu villages drop well below freezing during December and January.

In fact, many villagers themselves move towards the lower, warmer settlements during these coldest months.

The cold is the main risk here. It is the off-season which comes with consequences . You will find very rare teahouses open with less accommodation .

Note :Spring and autumn are perfect for Nar-Phu Valley trek with sunny days and only a light chill once the sun goes down.

How to make the most of your Nar Phu Valley Trek worth it ?

If you want to make this trek journey worth it,  visit both Nar and Phu villages instead of choosing just one.

After exploring these remote villages, continue across Kang La Pass (5,320 m) and descend to Ngawal.

You will get the perfect mix of adventure, breathtaking mountain views, and authentic cultural experiences.

Likewise , if you're concerned about crossing Kang La Pass because of its high altitude or challenging terrain, don't worry.

You can simply return back along the same trail after visiting Nar and Phu villages.

Although you'll miss the pass, you'll still enjoy the valley's unique landscapes, rich Tibetan culture, and peaceful mountain villages.

Lastly, if your fitness and acclimatization allow, the full route through Nar, Phu, Kang La Pass, and Ngawal is the most rewarding way to experience everything the Nar Phu Valley has to offer you .

How can you customize the Nar Phu Valley Trek?

We offer you a customized package. The trek is entirely based on your time and preference. You shall just give us the dates.

Whether you have only a few days or want a longer Himalayan adventure, you can choose an itinerary that works best for you.

Nar and Phu are two separate villages hidden deep in the Annapurna region. Some trekkers visit both villages . They then later continue over Kang La Pass, while others explore just one valley or combine the trek with other famous routes.

This flexibility makes the Nar Phu Valley Trek perfect  for both experienced trekkers  and travelers looking for a more relaxed journey.
