Upper Dolpo Trek, one of less frequented trek, lies in remote western part of Nepal. The trek takes you to the magical and mystical land where age-old Buddhist and Bonpo tradition blends perfectly with shamanistic influences and is still important part of daily life. The dramatic mountain vistas, authentic villages, gompas and people you meet during the trek will leave you spell bound. The people living in the region has primitive lifestyle with their own culture and dialects.
Dolpo region is very secluded part of Himalaya which has been strictly restricted until 1990, so the culture and lifestyle have still remained intact and untouched. The British tour operator organized a trek in 1990 from east to west, Pokhara to Jumla through Lower Dolpo. Trekkers need to obtain special trekking permit (need to obtain via authorized trekking agency in Nepal) to enter the area.
It is hard find the rugged beauty and pristine charm elsewhere, where one can meet nomadic people and their lifestyle almost untouched and unexplored. This trek offers remarkable and lifetime experience to witness astounding snowy peaks, isolated villages, high passes, age-old Buddhist monasteries, turquoise-tinted lakes and extensive assortment of natural vegetation. Upper Dolpo region falls under rain shadow area; resembling to Tibetan plateau with incredible beauty and unique culture.
Dolpo region is highly venerated in Peter Matthiessen’s book – The Snow Leopard. “The Caravan”, Nepal’s first ever English subtitled movie based on Dolpo region, was nominated for the Oscar Award in the best foreign language category.
The Upper Dolpo trail takes you to the revered Shey Gompa which is knowns as spiritual heart of Upper Dolpo. This mystical place is perched at the foothill of Crystal Mountain. Circumambulating (Kora) Crystal Mountain is one of the religious act performed by hundred pilgrims every years.
Upper Dolpo trail is one strenuous long hike in Nepal. Trekkers have to cross three high passes, Nagdalo La (5,350m), Shey La (5,010m) and Jeng La (5,220m). This high altitude crossing involves long ascend and long descend. Trekkers are likely to face a remote environment with extreme weather some days. Previous trekking experience, high fitness and positive attitude are highly recommended for the trek.
