Imagine finishing a day of trekking in the Himalayas, sitting outside a small mountain teahouse, and realizing that, far away, Nepali families are putting on their best clothes, preparing tika, and gathering for a huge Dashain feast.

That is trekking in Nepal during Dashain.

You get the mountains, the autumn skies, and the trails — but you also get to experience Nepal during one of its biggest and most meaningful festivals.

So, can you trek during Dashain?

Absolutely.

But there are a few things travelers should know before putting on their hiking boots.

First things first: What is Dashain?

Dashain is Nepal’s longest and most widely celebrated Hindu Festival, centered around family, blessings, food, new clothes and the worship of Goddess Durga.

For many Nepali people, Dashian means going home.

Families travel from cities back to their hometowns, relatives gather together, children get new clothes, homes become busy with celebrations and elders give younger family members tika and blessings.

It is one of those times when Nepal feels especially… Nepali.

And for a traveler, that makes October a particularly interesting time to visit.

So… Can you actually Trek during Dashain?

Yes.

Dashain does not mean that trekking suddenly stops.

The major trekking regions remain active, and October is also part of Nepal’s popular autumn trekking season. Nepal Tourism Board lists October-November among the best periods for the Everest region, for example.

But Dashain can change the rhythm of travel.

You may notice more Nepali families travelling on roads, some businesses operating on holiday schedules and certain services becoming less predictable around the major festival days.

Think of it less as: “Everything is closed!”

And more as:

“Nepal is celebrating- plan accordingly.”

The Best Part? You get Two Experiences in One Trip

This is what makes a Dashain trek special.

One day you could be walking through a quiet Himalayan village with prayer flags above you.

A few days later, you could be back in Kathmandu watching people dressed in their finest clothes, visiting relatives and carrying gifts home.

Dashain is traditionally a time of family reunions, blessings, feasting, new clothes, kite flying and village celebrations. Kathmandu can also become noticeably quieter as many residents leave the capital to return to their hometowns.

So your trip doesn’t have to be only about the mountains.

You can experience Nepal the traveler sees and Nepal the locals live.

What happens to Trekking Routes During Dashain?

Popular routes such as Everest, Annapurna and Manaslu can still be busy because October is peak trekking season.

However, the festival can affect the logistics around your trek.

Transportation may be busier around major travel days, and some local businesses may have reduced hours or close temporarily for holidays.

That is why we recommend having your transportation, accommodation, permits and guide arrangements confirmed before you leave.

Nepal Tourism Board notes that government offices and banks observe major national holidays, while business schedules can also vary during the Dashain holiday period.

In other words:

Don’t leave your trekking logistics to ‘I’ll figure it out when i get there.”

Your future self at 6 a.m. in a mountain town will thank you.

What about food?

Now we’re talking.

Dashain is a serious food season in Nepal.

Family feasts are a huge part of the celebration, and traditional dishes become even more special during the festival.

While trekking, you may not experience a full family Dashain Feast unless you’re invited into someone’s home- but you can still notice the festive atmosphere in villages and towns along the way.

And if a local family invites you to celebrate with them?

That’s a story worth remembering.

Just remember that festival traditions are personal and culturally significant. Be respectful, ask before taking photographs and follow your host’s lead.

Can Tourists Receive Tika?

You may see people wearing the iconic red tika, often mixed with yogurt and rice, especially around the main Tika celebration.

Elders traditionally give tika to younger family members with blessings.

If a Nepali family or host invites you to receive tika, it can be a beautiful cultural experience.

But don't walk up to someone's house demanding:

“Excuse me, where's my tika?” 😂

Let the invitation come naturally.

Which Treks are good during Dashain?

If your main goal is trekking, the classic autumn routes remain options.

Everest Base Camp

For travelers who want the iconic Himalayan Experience, October is one of the key months for Evenrest trekking.

You get mountain views, lively trails and the possibility of experiencing Dashain before or after your trek.

Annapurna Circuit

A great option if you want dramatic landscape changes, villages and a longer Himalayan Journey.

Annapurna Base Camp

A shorter Himalayan adventure for travelers who want big mountain scenery without commiting to an extremely long circuit.

Manalsu Circuit

For Travelers looking for a more remote-feeling experience, Manaslu can be an exciting October Option- but as with any 2026 trek, check current route condition before departure.

Langtang

Normally a fantastic autumn option, but 2026 travelers should check current access conditions carefully because recent flooding affected parts of the wider Rasuwa corridor.

One important 2026 Reminder

This isn’t just about Dashain.

If you’re trekking in Nepal in 2026, you gotta make sure that you check the latest route conditions before departure.

Some trekking regions have experienced recent weather-related infrastructure issues, so an itinerary that worked perfectly last year may need adjustments this year.

Also check whether your chosen route requires a licensed guide and agency-issued TIMS card. Nepal Tourism Board currently lists routes across Everest, Langtang, Manaslu, Annapurna and other regions under the revised guide/TIMS requirements.

A little planning = fewer surprises.

And Himalayan surprises should ideally be sunrise views, not missing bridges.

Is Dashain a Good time to visit Nepal?

If you’re interested in culture + trekking, it can be a very memorable time.

You get the beautiful autumn trekking season while seeing Nepal during one of its most important annual celebrations.

Just remember that Dashain is not a tourist show.

For Nepalis, it is deeply connected to family, religion, tradition and returning home.

So the best way to experience it is with curiosity and respect, rather than treating it like a festival performance created for visitors.

A few Dashain Trekking tips:

Book important transport early.

Many Nepalis travel home during Dashain, so roads and transport can become busier.

Keep some extra cash.

Holiday schedules can make banking and some services less convenient

Confirm your accommodation.

Don’t assume every lodge or service will operate normally throughout the holiday.

Be flexible.

Festival season has its own rhythm. Your itinerary may occasionally need a little breathing room.

Ask before photographing rituals.

Especially when you’re visiting homes, temples or family celebrations.

Embrace the food.

When appropriate, obviously. Nepalese hospitality during Dashain can be unforgettable.

And then there are the Mountains…

Perhaps the nicest thing about trekking during Dashain is the contrast.

You can spend your morning surrounded by Himalayn peaks and your evening learning about a celebration that brings millions of Nepalis together.

You are not travelling through Nepal.

You are visiting while Nepal is celebrating itself.

And honestly?

That’s a pretty beautiful time to be here.
